October 31, 2018, Sanur, Bali – Come check out “Life Below the Surface” at the CTC Center for Marine Conservation. This photo exhibition honors the International Year of the Reef 2018 by showcasing the beauty of coral reef ecosystems in Indonesia and strengthening the global awareness about the importance of coral reefs in order to motivate people to take action to protect them. Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems in the world with thousands of species and millions of people depending on reefs for food and protection, yet coral reefs are severely threatened by people through unsustainable fishing practices, pollution, ocean warming, acidification, sedimentation, and invasive species. We hope this photo exhibition inspires people to advocate for coral reef conservation.
The photographer, Robert Delfs, is a Senior Associate at Starling Resources, a consultancy specializing in marine biodiversity conservation, sustainable fisheries, and sustainable use of marine and terrestrial resources. He is currently based in Bali, Indonesia. Robert did his initial CMAS Open Water Diver course 25 years ago in Maumere, Flores.
He began taking underwater photographs in 2000. His images of nature have been widely published and exhibited in Indonesia and around the world. His objective in taking these photographs is to convey the beauty, complexity, and diversity of coral reefs and the underwater world of Indonesia and the Indo-Pacific Region, from the tiniest invertebrates to huge cetaceans and immensely-scaled biological communities. His photographic equipment is currently based on the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mk-II mirrorless camera mounted in a Nauticam underwater housing, with Inon Z-330 underwater strobes.
